Advice on Beginner Electric
Guitar Kits
If you’re starting on the guitar I guess
you’ll be needing to get hold of some kit!
Let’s start with the most important part – YOU
(I bet you thought I was going to say the guitar!)
Before buying anything do a quick bit of planning so you
know what you are looking for.
First Step
Decide what type of music that you want to pl
ay on the
guitar. Most people do decide on rock/metal, but there are
some who prefer more classical playing. To play rock you’ll
obviously need a good electric guitar.
For the classical amongst you I
would go for a simple classical acoustic. Acoustic guitars
aren’t just for classical playing, listen to most rock bands
and you'll most probably find at least one song with an
acoustic guitar in it.
Left or right handed?
It doesn’t particularly matter as all guitars can be strung
for left handed players, but the majority of guitars are
right handed. In some shops you might not find a left handed
guitar. Best to have a quick ring round your nearest music
shops to find the ones that stock a good range of left
handed guitars.
The Guitar Amplifier
Amplifiers
come in a very wide range of shapes, sizes and loudness
(power). For playing in a bedroom/study, you probably won’t
need much more than a 50 watt amp, this will turn up loud
enough to wake the neighbours! After using this amp for a
while, you might find that you need something bigger if you
want to play to audiences.
Bigger Amplifier
A medium size amp (about 250 watts) is a good choice. At the
moment the most popular electric guitar amps in the world
are made by Marshall. They do every single amp size from
huge stadium ones to tiny practice amps that clip to your
belt.
Buy a Beginner Electric Guitar Kit
Beginner electric guitar kits are provided by many music
stores. They normally contain the guitar, a 50 watt amp,
plus maybe a strap, lead and guitar pick (plectrum). Fender
has a very good kit that is worth a look. Some of their kits
include some excellent instruction videos.
Online v. High Street
It
is always good to try out the guitar and amp that you will
be buying, even if you get it cheaper on the net, go to a
music store and find the same model. Ask to try it out, just
to be sure you like it!
Sometimes even though the guitar you are trying is the same as the one you will be buying on the net, they might play slightly differently. This is down to the way they are made, with no 2 guitars being exactly the same. If you buy a kit from the internet, check the returns policy as if you don’t like the way the guitar you get plays you want to be able to send it back!
