Simple Steps To Change Guitar Strings

If you are unsure how to change your guitar strings just follow my simple steps to change guitar strings.

Without the strings the guitar would be useless!

*Remove the strings one by one, putting on the new string before removing the next old one*

String Tuning Tips

Step 1 - Removing the old strings

Slacken off the old string by turning the tuning peg until the string is loose.

Step 2 - Remove the string from the post.

Step 3 - Thread the old string back through the bridge.

Step 4 - Once the string is removed, wipe the fret board under the string with a dry, clean cloth to get rid of dirt.

Step 5 - Thread the new string through the bridge (wire end first) all the way until the ball end of the string hits the bridge.

Step 6 - Thread the other end through the tuning post. Leave enough slack so that you can pull it about 10cm from the fretboard and make a loop around the post. See Fig 1.

Thread the string through the tuning post, winding the slack string in the opposite direction in which the post tightens.

Step 7 - Start to tighten the string. When most of the slack has gone you should have wound it around about 3 times. Less than this will let the string slip and it will go out of tune.

Step 8 - To get rid off excess string hanging off the tuning peg, bend it into a kink and then cut with pliers.

Step 9 - Tune the string. It will need tuning a few times before it settles. To help it settle quicker it is best to hold it at the 12th fret and pull it away from the fretboard a few times to stretch it.

Step 10 - The tension of each string affects the others. If one new string goes out of tune then so will the others, so you may need to stretch and tunerepeatedly (probably around about 3-5 times!)
