An out of tune guitar sounds terrible! To avoid embarrassing out of tune moments follow my guitar tips for tuning below.
Battery powered guitar tuners are really helpful, but if the battery dies or the tuner breaks they're useless.
It is surprisingly easy to tune a guitar by ear, once you have learned how to do it, it will be quicker than using a battery powered tuner.
Watch the video below...
You only need to tune the bottom E guitar string to a piano or other instrument. Once you have tuned the guitar's low E string (6th string), you can then tune the rest of the strings to each other.
This is what your guitar should sound like when it is in tune...
Playing live is a completely different story. Chances are you don't want to leave the volume up while you tune as it is unprofessional. This creates a new problem - you can't hear the strings! There are a range of special live tuners that you can buy. Most are built into a foot pedal that can be plugged into the guitar. They have bright lights to show the pitch so the whole tuning process can be done by eye.
This is also excellent if you think you might be slightly out of tune but can't hear anything! Take a quick glance at the tuning pedal and tune mid song - this is a special art that has taken me hundreds of gigs to perfect!
