The Guitar note names

The guitar note names are E A D G B E. These are the names of the strings when they are played ‘open’.

From the picture above you can see that they also have numbers. Number 1 is the High E string, number 6 is the Low E string.

When reading music there are always notes from A to G – A B C D E F G. Once you get to G you go back to A again, but this A is the next octave up from the last one. An octave is 8 notes apart. The Low E string and High E string are 8 notes apart making them an octave.

These notes on the guitar are called standard tuning, meaning that this is the normal tuning of the guitar. All guitar tuners recognise these notes.
