Guitar Finger Exercises

In the last lesson I showed you how to pluck the strings. This lesson explains guitar finger exercises.

Placing your finger on a string to play a note is called ‘fretting a string’.

For this exercise put your index finger (i) on the 1st fret, 1st string (high e string). Make sure that you place it quite close to the fret, but not directly over it otherwise the string will buzz when you pluck it. It should look something like this -

Using the walking exercise pluck the 1st string. The note should sound clean and not buzzy or muted.

Next use your second finger (m) to play the 2nd fret 1st string. Keep your first finger (i) on the first fret. Again pluck the string using the walking exercise.

You can play the Jaws theme tune by taking off your second finger and fretting it again! Always keep your first finger (i) on the string, taking it off just means you have more work to do when you need to play the first fret again!
