Lesson 1: The names of each guitar string and how to play them.

Each string on the guitar has a name.

Starting with the thickest string on the guitar, the strings are E A D G B E.

Placing your fingers on the strings and pressing down on the fretboard makes the note higher.

When placing your finger on the string, it should not touch any other strings other than the one that you have your finger on. Your thumb should be behind the neck as shown, not hanging over the top of the neck.

In the pics above I have placed my finger on fret 1 on the low E string. This is an F note. Try playing this note by plucking the string with your right first finger.

Now use your first and second fingers in a walking motion to play the F note, resting your thumb on the guitar for stability. Note: You don't have to play the F note, you can also just play just the E string without having to use your left hand.

If you are playing the F note and you get a buzzing sound, make sure that your finger is pressing down on the fret board fairly firmly (but not too hard).
