Beginner Acoustic Guitar
Help: Beginner Acoustic Guitar Guitar Lessons Menu
For me, choosing an acoustic guitar took quite a few visits to different music shops. I wanted the perfect guitar on a very tight budget!I only had £145 that I had saved up for weeks doing my paper round (which by the way was only 24 papers, but stretched over 3 miles – 7 days a week for £12 per week!). My dad chipped in a fair bit of the cost as I had already spent months saving and I think he had got fed up of me asking him for a guitar! Up until I bought my first decent beginner acoustic guitar, I had been using a half-size, learner guitar made for small fingers. I actually don’t know where it came from but my dad seems to remember it was in the loft when they moved into the house. I still have it now – I’ve never sold any of my guitars. The trip to the first shop was a bit of a disaster. All of the guitars were way too expensive and the assistant didn’t seem to want to help much. I tried one beginner acoustic guitar and found that it was much harder to play than my smaller half-size one at home. We left fairly quickly. After several trips out, my dad took me to the music shop just up the road from us. They are still there today under ownership of some close friends, but 13 years ago the shop was owned by someone else who specialised in making violins. It turned out that they bought in other instruments. I remember walking in and looking around, on the wall to my left was a really excellent looking classical guitar. Being 9, I didn’t know much about what to test, but it felt right. That’s a very important point, if an instrument feels right, it probably is. I guess it’s like buying a house – you always have a gut feeling about the house you eventually buy! The strings on the guitar are nylon and it has a wonderful soft sound. I used this guitar to record a piece for one of my exams – listen to it here. Don’t forget when choosing to take your time. If it doesn’t feel and/or play comfortably, it’s not right for you. Play as many guitars as you can to find the right one. More help on buying an acoustic guitar
